How to Replace Oil Cooler

How to Replace Oil Cooler

This is the H22 Engine Cooler Read It

Place car on jack stands safely enough to work under the motor.
Here is your replacement oil cooler.

Now on our sample engine here we are going to go over the few easy steps it takes to replace this. Here you have your oil filter. The oil cooler is located behind the oil filter. So what you are going to do here is remove the oil filter with your oil strap wrench. Be careful oil is going to spill out when you take the filter off.

Now once you have the filter removed the above picture is what you should see. Now you will notice another the little nipple thing sticking out. That is the oil cooler bolt. Its what holds the oil filter onto the oil cooler. This is where you will take the 32 mm socket and remove the bolt itself.

Now the oil cooler is held onto only by the little black tubes now. Those tubes are coolant lines. You are going to have to remove them now. Now once you remove these coolant lines they are going to leak coolant. So its going to get messy.

Hook your new oil cooler up as quick as you can to prevent major loss of coolant. Now the oil cooler O ring is suggested to be replaced, but you can reuse it no problem. Just make sure that you grease the oil cooler o ring with oil before reinstalling the oil cooler to block.

Once you have that done install the oil cooler bolt to 32 lbs. Do not over toruqe it other wise you will break the oil cooler o ring. Now reinstall the oil filter. Once you are sure everything is installed properly after double checkig, start the car up and let it run for 5 mins.

Examine for leaks, if there are none, your fine, if there are, unistall and reinstall again. If leaks persist, replace the oil cooler o-ring. Once all is said and done, level out the car and replace the coolant and oil levels to appropriate levels. Also bleeding the coolant is needed.

Replaceing the oil cooler ring itself is done in the same manner.  New oil cooler rings are slightly larger and need to be pressed into place on the oil cooler itself.  to do that follow these steps.

  • Remove Oil Cooler from Block
  • Clean oil cooler off from oil and coolant
  • Dry it good
  • Spread some liquid gasket where the oil cooler ring goes on the cooler
  • Place the New Oil Cooler Ring into Place and Let it Set for an hour or so
  • Reinstall the Oil Cooler carefully and make sure the new ring stays on in place without falling off

Tip: Installing a new oil cooler ring is tricky because it doesn't want to stay on properly.  Using a tacky gasket sealant will help to hold the ring in place while you install it.
